After an 8-year
hiatus from the Championship game for the right to hoist the Cup the Rochester
Rockets made it back on February 10, 2010.
In the Leagues
inaugural season of 2002 the Rockets coached by Bob Mill and led by Freshman
Andrew Berecz (who later played for the Springfield Jr. Blues) played against
the powerhouse Glenwood Titans coached by Danny Sheedy for the Lincoln Land Cup
but lost to Glenwood. Andrew Berecz
never again played for the Rockets, thus began the Berecz Curse.
So on Wednesday
night at the Nelson Center in front of a good crowd, Rochester’s quest to break
the curse began by playing the Champaign Chiefs for the Cup. Those who didn’t attend should have. After a rousing National Anthem and a
ceremonial puck drop by terrific Teri Weems, the game got underway. The game was hard hitting and exciting from
the first puck drop to the final horn.
Rochester came out strong in the first period with goals being scored by
Kyle Lewis and Vincent Cannamela. At
the end of the first period the Rockets led the Chiefs 2-0. In the second period the Chiefs found their
legs but Vincent Cannamela slipped one by Chiefs goalie Cameron Hearn to take a
3-0 lead near the end of the second period.
In the third period the Chiefs started to pour it on. Goals scored by Bryan Huhn and Hud Hunter
closed the gap to a 3-2 score with 5:46 to play. With the help of a boisterous student cheering section the
Rockets were able to weather the storm from the Chiefs after they pulled their
goalie for a 6 to 5 man advantage.
Rockets goalie Zach Piper played one his best game of the season for
Rochester by stopping 36 of 38 shots on goal.
If the Rockets weren’t so busy hoisting the Lincoln Land Cup there is no
doubt they would have asked to have Piper made one of the stars of the
game.
The League would
like to congratulate the Champaign Chiefs for their successful season and the
Rochester Rockets for winning the 2010 Lincoln Land Cup.
The following also should be recognized for their help with
the Championship game.
Doug Nelson,
Elizabeth Thurman,
Teri Weems,
Jim Cannamela and WAND TV for their news coverage.
